The Jefferson Boulevard Viaduct two-way cycle track is open. Use this link to look at how the City has planned for you to enter and exit this facility by following the traffic controls now in place (e.g. regulatory guidance signs, STOP signs, STOP bars). Note: Oak Cliff to Downtown traffic: At end of cycle track just south of Market St. and Young St., follow signs on the sidewalk to Young St. and Record St. Bicycle use on sidewalks will not be permitted beyond that point in the Downtown area. Please follow all traffic laws when sharing the roadway and in Downtown bike lanes. Helmet use is mandatory on all public ways in Dallas.

Bike Plan Update
In response to Bicycling Magazine’s ranking of Dallas as one of the three worst cities in the US for biking, here are some Bike Plan early implementation projects that are in the works. From the Public Information Office of City Hall, the latest bicycle infrastructure projects the City of Dallas is working on to establish strategic bike linkages between trails and key destinations:
- Dallas currently has 115 miles of off-street trails that are in use today. Through a federal grant the City is implementing 70 trail-road crossings with traffic control and safety treatments that are expected to be completed by the Summer/Fall of 2014.
- Construction is underway on improvements to Bishop Avenue between Davis and Colorado (linking Bishop Arts to Methodist Hospital) which include bike lanes.
- Funding has been committed and plans are underway to implement this summer on-street bike facilities from Bishop at Colorado to Young Street at Union Station via the Jefferson Viaduct, effectively linking Bishop Arts to Downtown Dallas.
- Funding has been committed and plans are underway to implement this summer on-street bike facilities linking the Katy Trail and the Santa Fe Trail through Downtown Dallas.
- A street striping project was completed recently on MLK Blvd. in Southern Dallas linking to Fair Park.
- Plans are underway and funding has been identified for an on-street bike facility along the Davis corridor in Oak Cliff between N. Bagley and E. 8th Street at Corinth.
- Plans are underway to test a bike facility on Fort Worth Avenue for implementation this summer.
- The City is collaborating with DART to implement several on-street bike facility linkages to transit stations within the downtown area over a one year time frame. The City is also collaborating with Dallas County to implement critical trail linkages in North Dallas.
Bicycle Ride to Dallas Green Festival, September 24th
On Saturday, September 24th, residents are encouraged to participate in a mass bicycle ride to the Dallas Green Festival at Fair Park. The ride will be a fun and fitting way to get to a City event that is being planned to celebrate environmentally positive living. Please coordinate with your local bike-friendly group to organize or join a ride to the meet-up at Main Street Garden Park which will take place from 9:30AM to 10:00AM. The mass ride will begin at 10:00 AM, and will do a loop through Downtown and Deep Ellum on its way to a bicycle “corral” (parking area) that will be set up at Fair Park near the Green Festival at Texas Discovery Gardens. As always, helmet use is mandatory for these rides. Bicycle to the Dallas Green Festival
All,
The City wants to host its next “critical mass” bicycle ride on Saturday, September 24th from Main Street Garden to Fair Park for the Dallas Green Festival. Are the bike-friendly groups OK with organizing rides that morning to the meetup at Main Street Garden from 9:30-10:00AM? I’ll post an invite about this ride as soon as I get at least a few responses about the bike-friendly rides . . .

DART bike pods
New bicycle parking have been available at all DART light rail stations for roughly two months now. Below is directly from DART’s website (http://dart.org/riding/bike.asp) and provides details about the new pods including how many are at each station and some contact information.

New Bike Lids To Replace Bike Lockers In Calendar Year 2011
DART has received a federal grant to replace aged and worn bike lockers with a new environmentally friendly state of the art bike lids.
The 142 new bike lids meet homeland security requirements, are homeless and vandal resistant, and do not overheat and melt plastic bike components.
Use of the new bike lids will be on a first come, first served bases. Cyclists will be required to provide their own padlock used to secure the bike lid. DART may add additional bike lids at a later date where demand exceeds supply. Please keep in-mind that overnight bicycle storage and/or locking of unused lids will not be allowed.
Bike Lid Installations as of July 2011:
DART is in the process of removing damaged bike lockers now. All bicycles stored in damaged lockers that are removed will be logged into DART’s lost-and-found. At a future date DART will notify cyclists that all bicycles stored in undamaged lockers will need to be removed in preparation for this project.
Because of these changes,
DART IS NO LONGER ACCEPTING RESERVATIONS OR MAINTAINING WAITING LISTS FOR BIKE LOCKERS RENTALS.

Bike pod at DART stations
DART has it’s next generation bicycle parking at all train stations throughout the rail network. Unlike it’s predecessor, you don’t have to call and reserve the pods, just simply roll up, lift the cover, and lock it up with your own lock. The pods are made of a lighter, more weather resistant material, unlike the former boxes that seemed to disintegrate before your eyes.

Also, in other DART news, all rail stations are now equipped to handle credit card transactions. Good news for riders who never seem to have cash!
